Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
